Always great to hear John play in such an interactive trio! The CD features tunes written by jazz composers/players. "Black Eyes" is a Wayne Shorter tune. The guitar solo has nice triplets and chordal passages, nice electric bass solo follows before guitar and drum trades. "Three French Nuns" by Stowell shows a more angular and moody side to his playing. "Chan's Song" is by Herbie Hancock, it is a feature for bass with some lovely understated guitar playing. "Contours" is by bassist Johnson, who plays a great solo on the upright, with John's solo showing intensity without ever rushing. "Windchaser" is an open time tune by Stowell and features free-wheeling interplay, a real strength on this trio. Tracks 6 are 8 are by Johnson, contemporary and interesting writing, "Lifelines" featuring acoustic guitar. Track 9 is Coltrane's tune "Resolution" which gets an unusual reading...open and funky, the tune is only really played at the end! Lastly "Silent Photographer," the title track is an acoustic open ballad and a feature for John's wonderful playing. Great CD all around.
