About the music:
Slinky – I came up with the
7/8 chord pattern on guitar and Mark Taylor wrote the counter line in
my Ballard apartment. The rest just came together.
God Put A Smile Upon Your Face –
Continuing my long tradition of covering the music of British rock bands…never
really noticed that fact until this recording. My wife bought Coldplay’s
CD and I soon put it in heavy rotation in my car. Great band, great
music. This was a fun arrangement to work on in the studio.
Hope (parts 1 – 3)
Everything that is done in the world is done by hope.
--Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Che – This is a great song
by saxophonist Matt Otto. Matt and I went to the New School together
and is a great friend and a wonderful saxophone player. He wrote Che
for a 451 gig in New York and it has been in the book ever since. Che
was originally recorded as a quartet during the Quiet Silence session
but was never used. We recorded it again as a quintet in Portland during
a tour which is the version that appears here.
Peacefulness – * for the proper
listening experience, please put on headphones and turn out the lights.
– thank you.
Sanguine – A great performance
by Mark Taylor (all the saxophone parts are played by him). Mark had
a bunch of sketches of ideas and the band spent an afternoon hashing
the arrangement. This is probably my favorite tune on the CD.
Pack Sack - What can you do with
eight notes? Here is our best effort.
Fables of Faubus is my favorite Charles
Mingus composition. It was written in protest for Orval E. Faubus who
was the governor of Arkansas in 1957 and against desegregation. He sent
the National Guard to prevent black children from attending high school
in Little Rock.
Ibrahymn – A Ryan Burns classic.
Ryan joined the group at the beginning of the Quiet Silence tour. His
instrument is the Fender Rhodes and he knows it’s sounds inside
and out and has led to a cohesive sound for the band.
